Lauren Faye is a health coach, actor, model, and one of Blawesome’s Community Leaders. An athletic adolescence led to her getting 12 concussions, resulting in Post Concussion Syndrome. This caused her to spend most of 8th grade, and many months throughout high school cocooned in her bedroom, lights off, with no screens.

Unable to do the sports she loved, Lauren spent those months learning about meditation and neuroplasticity. She discovered her passion for health and wellness and went on to study Public Health, Holistic Healing/Alternative Medicine, and Nutrition. As an adult living with  Hypothyroidism/Thyroiditis, Post Concussion Syndrome, and Dysautonomia, Lauren manages her physical and emotional health with healing foods and a positive mindset. As a coach, her mission is to help people feel supported and learn lifelong tools for a healthy lifestyle.

Lauren, you're an actor and model and more recently started leaning into your passion for health and wellness. However, healthy habits are not a new trend for you. You learned meditation and various other habits to balance your mental and emotional wellbeing from a very young age. Would you please share more about why you got into wellness practices and how they helped you?

When I was 13 years old, I suffered the first of 12 concussions and was eventually diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome. This syndrome led me to discover meditation and yoga and the concept of a "mind-body" connection. Once I realized these practices' benefits on my overall physical and emotional wellbeing, I knew I wanted to keep learning more.

As an adult, you currently live with hypothyroidism/thyroiditis, post-concussion syndrome, and dysautonomia, which you manage with diet and movement. Would you mind sharing what these are for anyone who might not know and sharing what has worked for you in managing symptoms?

The thyroid gland controls your metabolism. Hypothyroidism means your thyroid glands don't produce enough crucial hormones. Thyroiditis is swelling of the thyroid gland. Some symptoms of these issues include fatigue, increased sensitivity to cold, dry skin, hoarseness, muscle weakness/aches, cholesterol issues, thinning hair, issues with heart rate, depression, and memory problems.

Post-Concussion Syndrome occurs when symptoms of a concussion (mild traumatic brain injury) last longer than expected. Some symptoms include headaches, dizziness, fatigue, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, poor concentration and memory, ringing in the ears, vision problems, eye pain, and noise and light sensitivity.

Dysautonomia is a disorder of the Autonomic Nervous System. The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary functions, such as heartbeat, breathing, and digestion. Some symptoms of dysautonomia include vertigo/dizziness, blood pressure problems, heart rate and heartbeat problems, fatigue, fainting, nausea, headaches, brain fog, dehydration, low blood sugar, body temperature fluctuations, sleeping problems, difficulty breathing, exercise intolerance because of heart rate not adjusting to change inactivity, and difficulty digesting food.

As you can see, this is a lot to manage. My life is entirely different from how it used to be, but I've developed tools that have helped me cope with everyday life over the years. Diet has been a HUGE factor in managing my symptoms. I've learned so much about how food can heal or harm the body. Once I changed my eating to a diet that suited my conditions, I saw a tremendous improvement in my overall wellbeing. This change involved eliminating trouble maker foods such as gluten, dairy, soy, peanuts, caffeine, and alcohol and incorporating healing foods such as cooked vegetables, smoothies, and juices. Celery juice has been a lifesaver!

Growing up, I was extremely into sports. I loved being active and competitive. Unfortunately, I had to quit sports due to concussions, and it was vital for me to find a new way to express myself physically and creatively. Discovering my love for hiking, yoga, music, and travel has done this for me!

You have shared that you love helping people start living a more healthy lifestyle. What specifically do you love helping people with and why?

I love helping people become their best selves! I believe everyone deserves to feel good physically and mentally, and I have a passion for teaching people the lifelong tools to do this!

What is your favourite wellness tip that you do yourself reasonably consistently and that you suggest to others who want to feel better?

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY :) it's easy to get caught up because we are "supposed" to feel or act a certain way. However, if you can tune in to what your body is asking for and honour that, it can do wonders for your overall health and wellness!
